Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers surprised Hollywood observers by taking the top spot at the box office the first two nights of its release, grossing $2.5 million on Wednesday and $2.1 million on Thursday, more than doubling the grosses of second-place House of Gucci and third-place Encanto.

It finished fourth for the weekend with an estimated gross of $4.1 million despite playing in only 1,700 theaters – less than half the number of theaters used by Encanto (3,980), which won the weekend with a $12.7 million gross.

A new episode of The Chosen is included, as well as musical performances by faith-based artists such as Phil Wickham, For King and Country, Maverick City Music, Cain, Brandon Lake, Jordan Feliz, We the Kingdom, and Matt Maher. The Chosen is a popular Netflix show about Jesus and his disciples.

The film is the highest-grossing and most-attended film in Fathom Events’ history

The film’s impressive opening drew the attention of Hollywood’s press. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the film “did record business.”

The headline on Deadline.com read, “Fathom’s Crowd-Funded ‘Christmas With The Chosen’ Breaks A Record.”

“Getting a big shout for the weekend is Fathom Events’ faith-based Christmas With the Chosen, which is playing in 1,642 theaters and 194 markets and has rivals scratching their heads,” according to a Deadline article.

Christmas with The Chosen: The Messengers is set to be released in theaters on December 10th.
