Woman Requests Baptism Hours Before Life-Saving Heart Surgery
Just hours before major heart surgery,
Akira Joy Hendricks had one urgent request.
The Georgia woman, who was in advanced heart failure, was preparing to receive a left ventricular assist device (LVAD) — a mechanical pump implanted to help her heart function. Once the device is placed, patients can no longer be fully submerged in water. That meant a traditional baptism would no longer be possible afterward.
So hospital staff at Piedmont Augusta sprang into action.
An inflatable pool was set up in the bathroom of her patient room. A family friend who serves as a pastor prepared to baptize her. Relatives gathered, and hospital staff filled the space to witness the moment. In a scene the hospital described as unlike anything they had seen before, Hendricks was baptized right there in her room.
“It was very time-sensitive to get the baptism done before the patient had the procedure so that she could be kept safe and also meet her spiritual care needs,” said one hospital leader involved in coordinating the moment.
Faith Before the Procedure
For Hendricks, the baptism was not optional. Facing a serious and life-altering surgery, she wanted to publicly declare her faith in Jesus Christ while she still could. The staff’s willingness to rearrange medical logistics around her spiritual priority turned a clinical setting into a place of worship and obedience.
The story has resonated widely because it captures something simple yet profound: even in the face of medical urgency, some people still put their relationship with Christ first.
A Quiet but Powerful Witness
In an age of high-profile athlete declarations and stadium baptisms, this moment stands out for its intimacy. There were no cameras planned for social media. No stage. Just a hospital room, an inflatable pool, a pastor, family, and a woman determined to be baptized before surgery.
It is a reminder that faith is not only lived out in public arenas. Sometimes the most powerful declarations of “Jesus is Lord” happen in ordinary rooms when eternity feels especially close.
Akira Joy Hendricks went into surgery having already made the most important decision of all.
