Lecrae, a Grammy Award-winning artist, recently canceled a spring tour date after tweeting that he was no longer a part of the institutionalized church.
“Once upon a time, I thought I’d had enough of Christianity.” But the reality was that I was tired of the institutionalized, corporatized, gentrified, politicized, and culturally exclusive version of it,” Lecrae, the founder of Reach Records, wrote last Tuesday.


The following day, the popular rapper retweeted his original tweet, writing, “Just lost a show because of this tweet.” Point proven.”

“Vulnerability causes people to be expelled from exclusive tribes.” “Jesus welcomes the outcast and seeks to heal,” he went on.

According to Lecrae, he decided to post the tweet because he wanted to encourage people in the midst of the growing number of people who are rejecting Christianity.

 

“What inspired the tweet was the fact that a few people I know this year who have been professing Christians for years have decided they no longer claim Christianity,” he explained.

“I just thought, ‘Man, I know that feeling.'” But sometimes we throw out the baby with the bathwater, and I just wanted to encourage people by saying, ‘Hey, I know where you’re [at], what you’re feeling.’ But sometimes the issue isn’t with the faith; it’s with the distortions of the faith,'” the rapper continued.

Lecrae, a native Texan, is currently preparing for his upcoming national “We Are Unashamed” Tour. The artist revealed that after tweeting, he lost a Christian venue, forcing him to cancel one of his tour dates.

“It affected not only me, but all of the artists on the tour,” Lecrae explained.

Nonetheless, many others have contacted him in an attempt to reschedule the canceled tour date.

In December 2020, Lecrae sparked outrage after performing at a “Get Out the Early Vote Rally & Concert” in Atlanta, Georgia. The event was co-hosted by pro-choice Democrat Raphael Warnock during the state’s hotly contested runoff Senate election. He told The Christian Post that his performance at the event continues to bother him to this day.

“Whether it’s because I’m supporting candidates they don’t like, which I’ve never publicly supported any candidate, but whatever it is, they look at anything I post as confirmation of a rumor they’ve heard rather than getting clarification from me,” he argued.

Lecrae also encouraged those interested in booking him for an event to “reach out to me for clarification.”
